Using VoiceThread in the Classroom-     I have created a VoiceThread to use as a discussion board with my 8th-grade social studies class. I have been looking for more ways to encourage interaction and participation by using tools that relate to how they communicate amongst themselves in the real world. In Bermuda, teens enjoy sharing their ideas about regular everyday life information through voice notes. Additionally, I wanted to make a connection between historical events of the 20th- Century and the 21st-Century.  The discussion is based on a topic we have been looking at in school. We are talking about Colonialism, imperialism, and their effects on various regions around the world including Bermuda, the Caribbean, and Africa.  The VT discussion question is: Is there a New Imperialism in the 21st Century?  VT- Discussion Question- Is there a New Imperialism in the 21st-Century?  Google Slide- Document Assignment
Constructivist Learning Theory, Teaching, and Learning According to Guzdial (2018), the constructivists learning theory states students construct their meaning in learning. It uses interactive strategies to create meaningful contexts that help students make meaning for their learning.  Inquiry-based, problem-based, and cooperative learning are all learning strategies that incorporate the ideals of constructivist learning (Kurt, 2021).  Technology is an excellent way to provide students with a learning environment that can bring meaning to their learning (Noel, 2015).  Noel also notes that blogging is one example of how technology can facilitate meaningful learning in the constructivist learning environment.  However, constructionism, while based on the theory of constructivism, focused on the fact that students learn more when they construct something like an artifact.  Like constructivism, constructionism believes that learning must be meaningful. Additionally, constructionism val
Reflective Essay: Final Reflection and Blog Posting on the Impact of Technology There is so much to consider when thinking about technology in education, society, and work. Thornburg asks us to think about how technology impacts society and the social impacts (Laureate Education (Producer), 2015).  It's also a critical topic to consider the changing work environment and how it is changing for everyone. Before this class, I believed that I was very technologically savvy and had much to offer my students to build their technology use and abilities. However, I learned the humbling reality that I had much to learn and that the possibilities and modalities are endless. Initially, I believed that using technology was to help students prepare for a technology-driven world. I desired to increase students' engagement by using the tools that they like and are interested in. However, Richardson (2015) explains that technology is not the answer to the lack of learner engagement; it i
Using Bloggs In the Classroom-  The  way that I would use a blog in my classroom would be used for the students directly. I find that the parents already have so  much correspondence from the school that another source may become overwhelming.  My blog would be used to encourage dialogue  between students. I have considered sharing my blog with a  former  colleague from a nother school and allowing her students to  participate as well. These activities can  foster  the ISTE  students'  standards of creative  communication and globa l collaboration  ( ISTE Standards for Students | ISTE , n.d.)    By encouraging students to participate in learning while using technology,  I foster  the ISTE standards for teachers.    Standard six states that I should facilitate the use of technology in  learning ( ISTE Standards for Educators ,   I STE,   n.d.)   Currently, I am teaching grades 6-8 Social Studies  which mostly incorporates geography and history, and a small amount of civics and econ
Gaining Confidence in the World of Blogging- Gaining Confidence in blogging takes time and effort, especially when much of it is new and completely foreign. The process must be taken one step at a time. Learning and growing as time goes on. But it is essential to be open-minded enough to allow for a shift in the way you think about it.   I can say that I have confidence in the world of blogging when I have read and understood more about blogging value, and the fear of not knowing how it works withers away. Vance (2018) notes that technology is appearing and changing so fast that educators barely get to use them. The frequent change can make blogging intimidating; the key is to make small steps to help students and educators become better learners. What we are looking at is a total learning mind shift. I have chosen to follow three educational leaders to help with my Mindshift: Will Richardson, Gary Stager, and Matt Miller. I also included Edutopia even though they are not an indi
WELCOME! My name is Denika A. E. Wade, and I have been an educator for 20 years at the primary and middle school levels. Most of my time has been spent in 6th -8th grade Social Studies. This is my very first blog and blog post.  Richardson (2010) encourages us to get started but start small. As I explore the possibilities of blogging and all the skills I will gain, I invite you all to join me on the ride. Feel free to comment and share in this experience so that I can grow! When I am done, I will introduce my students to a whole new learning environment of communication and collaboration. Tucker (2014) reminds us that "The digital age is here, and it is evident that educators must embrace the 21st century learning paradigm shift to ensure that students are adequately prepared for the global workforce."  Let's get prepared to prepare them!
